Project Overview

H2Engineering was hired to perform MEP design services for the replacement of the existing HVAC systems across Shadeville Elementary School. A thorough study was performed and coordinated with the owner, resulting in multiple design options to weigh the pros and cons. It was decided to use two air-cooled chillers and two gas boilers, with one for each being 100% redundant. All air handling units were replaced one-for-one throughout the campus. One building had DX units, which were replaced with 4-pipe blower coil units. A new campus hydronic piping distribution system was provided around the building underground and ran into the mechanical rooms on the perimeter side of each building. Careful consideration was taken throughout the design to allow for phasing of the project because of the amount of work and time it would take to not disrupt normal operations of the school. One challenge of many for this project was to design a new 4-pipe air handling unit with maintenance and longevity in mind, with very limited mechanical room space. Modifications to the existing electrical systems to support the new HVAC infrastructure, including the addition of a new electrical distribution panel for the chillers. Select mechanical spaces will receive new lighting fixtures to replace existing ones. The fire alarm system was extended to accommodate relocations and new devices as needed.
